The correlations are small - 0.05 within persons, 0.08 between - and the authors state plainly that the practical effect is comparable to other everyday activities. People who move more may differ from people who move less in many ways this design cannot adjust away. The association runs in both directions, so "exercise lifts mood" is only half of what was measured: feeling better also predicts moving next. Considerable heterogeneity across individuals, only partly explained by sociodemographic moderators, means the average says little about any one person. The negative association with calmness is a real finding rather than a nuance to skip - activity tracked energetic arousal most strongly, so someone seeking calm may not find it here.
Moving makes you feel better. The effect is real, measured in ordinary life, and small.
Most of what we know about exercise and mood comes from labs, or from trials where someone was told to exercise. This pooled the raw data from 67 studies that tracked ordinary people through ordinary days: accelerometers on the body, mood questions on the phone.
Within a person, the correlation is 0.05
That is small, and the authors say so plainly - comparable to other everyday activities. It runs both ways. How you feel predicts whether you move next, and moving predicts how you feel after.
The texture is more useful than the headline. Activity was tied most strongly to feeling awake and capable, then to positive feelings generally. It was negatively related to calmness. Movement makes you feel more alive, not more settled.
The limit: this is observational, and no correlation this size can be read as a promise.
Worth noticing
If what you need is settling rather than energising, this is the wrong tool - and that is worth knowing before you blame yourself.
