Two countries

Only two countries in the industrialized world let a prescription-drug ad name the drug and its promise in the same breath: the United States and New Zealand.

The United States and New Zealand are the only countries in the industrialized world that permit direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription medicines that includes product claims.

You have heard a shorter version, that America is one of only two countries where drug ads are legal. That version is false. The precise one is verified two independent ways.

Significant findings

Three words carry the sentence, and each answers an attack.

Product claims: Canada allows an ad to name the drug or the condition, never both. Industrialized: outside the OECD the law is murkier, so "only two countries on Earth" overreaches. Prescription: over-the-counter drug ads are legal almost everywhere.

New Zealand's status is old law rather than endorsement, a Medicines Act passed in 1981. Its own medical profession has documented its opposition.

Worth asking

Seeing a drug named and promised on television is an American and New Zealand experience, not a global one. Wherever the ad is legal, the response is the same.

Is this clearly indicated for what I have? What is the absolute benefit, what are the harms, and what are the alternatives, including generics?
